Our story – Why 1971 Capital?
In 1971, humanity’s use of natural resources was roughly in balance with the Earth’s ability to regenerate them. We consumed about one planet’s worth of ecological resources each year.
That same year marked the first Earth Overshoot Day, a date when humanity’s demand for natural resources exceeded what the planet could renew. Today humanity consumes 1.7 times the natural resources that the earth is capable of regenerating annually.
This accelerating shift represents a growing ecological deficit, a global overspend of nature’s capital. It also represents a defining moment for change. 1971 Capital draws its name and purpose from this point in history.
